Course Description

Tiantai school, which is one of Chinese Buddhist schools, formed and developed in China as its thoughts are based on the Lotus Sutra and the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra. This course will introduce Chinese Tiantai thoughts and its development in the Tang (618-907) and the Song (960-1127) dynasties from social, historical and doctrinal perspectives. We will primarily emphasize discussion on the main doctrines of the school as well as that from social and historical perspectives how social and philosophical movements of its contemporary times in China gave rise to the school to form these doctrines.

As for the further influence of the school to Japan, the course will introduce the Tendai and the Nichiren sects of Japanese Buddhism to see how the Lotus Sutra and Chinese Tiantai school bring influence to Japanese Buddhism.

The course will be divided into three sections, which are: before the Tiantai school, the formation and the development of the Tiantai school in China, and Japanese Tendai and Nichiren sects.
