Course Description

Buddhism as a lived religion does not just exit in texts but is also practiced by people in real life. As such Buddhist discourse changes and adapts to answer issues arise in our time (e.g. climate change, globalization, inter-religious conflict, tourism, etc.). This course is designed to investigate those issues and Buddhist response to them. Students are expected to practice in class discussion. We hope that through this class, students will gain further insight into the pluralist world and diverse Buddhist cultures around the globe.

“Topics in Contemporary Buddhism” will discuss social, cultural and ethical issues in contemporary Buddhism. We aim not only to help students developing academic skills of researching Buddhism but also to widen students’ views on different Buddhist traditions and interplaying elements. There will be controversial issues to discuss such as Buddhism & violence,etc. By so doing, we hope students can gain better understanding of the pluralist world and insight into diverse Buddhist cultures around the globe.

學生請假規則

1. 學生請假悉依本校「學則」及「學生請假辦法」規定辦理。
2. 依本校「學則」第33條，曠課一小時，以缺課二小時論。學生某一科目之缺課總時數達該科全學期授課時數三分之一，經該科教師扣考後，即不准參加該科目之學期各項學習成績考試或評量。
