Course Description
 
This course is designed to acquaint students with the major features of Canadian literature and culture. A brief history of European colonization, Confederation, Westward expansion, and multiculturalism in Canada will be first introduced. The Quebec issue will be discussed in class too. Readings will include both cultural texts drawn from various sources and fictional stories by writers such as Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood, Carol Shields, L.M. Montgomery, Mavis Gallant, Thomas King, Guy Vanderhaeghe, Jack Hodgins, Rudy Wiebe etc. These texts and stories raise complex and sensitive issues of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and region. The central question to be addressed in this course is the formation and articulation of Canadian national and literary identity.
本課程旨在讓同學熟悉加拿大文學與文化的主要特色。為了建立學生對加拿大歷史的理解,本課程將先介紹加拿大早期歐洲殖民史、十九世紀的加拿大聯邦成立與西進拓展、二十世紀下半葉的多元文化政,因為這些歷史事件對加拿大的國族意識形成與文學發展有決定性的影響,魁北克的議題也將被討論。閱讀題材涵蓋文學與非文學作品,這些作品處觸及種族、性別、族裔、性別、性向、階級、區域等複雜又敏感的議題,透過閱讀這些作品,學生將能對加拿大文學與文化的特色有初步的瞭解。

2. 依本校「學則」第33條,曠課一小時,以缺課二小時論。學生某一科目之缺課總時數達該科全學期授課時數三分之一,經該科教師扣考後,即不准參加該科目之學期各項學習成績考試或評量。
