 Course Description
 
「美國文化與文學」課程旨在提供學生美國文化演進與其文學史的發展，作概觀介紹，課程將選讀美國文學史上的代表性與著名的著作，同時也盡可能涵概各種文類，希望引導學生培養思辯文學作品的社會、宗教等文化背景的交互影響。課堂選文擇要進行探究。課程著重培養學生閱讀、賞析文學作品的能力，讓學生藉由文學作品的閱讀與批判思考，能以宏觀的角度觀察到人類思潮的變遷歷程，並感受到文化藝術的蓬勃發展。

This course is designed to provide students with a brief introduction to the history of American literature and to the cultural tradition of New England from the Colonial Period to the age of American Naturalism. A variety of genres and texts in American literature will be discussed and examined to assist students in understanding the development of America’s intellectual tradition and literary history. The socio-historical, religious, cultural, and literary backgrounds of America’s literary works will be introduced. Also, this course aims to enhance students’ abilities of examining and appreciating literary texts. It aims to help students understand the cultural and intellectual histories that shape the American writings.
