Course Description

Comics and graphic novels are one of the world’s most popular storytelling media and very welcome among children, teenagers, and even adults. They also play an important part in the publishing industry. This course will start by introducing students to the publishing industry of comics and graphic novels and to the spectrum of comic-art forms. Based on these basics, students will learn how to read and understand comics and graphic novels in order to translate them into Chinese. The materials for discussion will be selected mainly from the US and the UK. The course aims not only to familiarize students with the specific knowledge and skills required for the translation of comics and graphic novels but also to increase their capacity for understanding both the differences between English and Chinese in terms of languages and cultures and the cultural diversity among English-speaking countries as shown in the selected works.
