Course Description
 
Since Indian Mahāyāna Buddhism was transmitted to China in the 1st century, Buddhist teachings were interpreted and reinterpreted through different dynasties in a way that made Buddhism distinct from itself before it reached to China. The development of Chinese Buddhist thoughts became mature in the Tang dynasty. The course will primarily examine three major Chinese Buddhist thoughts, which are the Tiantai, the Huayan, and the Chan schools, in the Tang dynasty. In addition, the course will discuss the development of Chinese Buddhist thoughts before and after the Tang dynasty.

Course Objectives

 Students will be able to have a complete scope of the development of Chinese Buddhist thoughts.
 Students will be able to identify characteristics of Chinese Buddhist thoughts of different dynasties.
 Students will be able to compare and contrast Chinese Buddhist thoughts among Chinese Buddhist schools in the Tang dynasty as well as intellectual relationships among them.
 Students will know what Chinese Buddhism is through characteristics of Chinese Buddhist thoughts.
