Course Description

本課程旨在介紹莎士比亞的時代，即英國的文藝復興時期，之政治、社會、經濟、文化背景，以及莎士比亞的生平和重要作品，包括詩和戲劇。透過閱讀歷史資料和莎翁作品，探索莎翁作品中人性的複雜性、欣賞其高妙之修辭技巧，並且鍛鍊學生批判性思考的能力。學生亦將增進英文閱讀能力、字彙、加強報告技巧，並且提升批判思考和寫作能力。所有的訓練終將回饋至更美好的精神和物質生活，並且以人文關懷的觀點理解和介入我們所處的環境。
The course, Shakespeare and the Renaissance Culture, aims to familiarize students with Shakespeare’s time, the culture of Renaissance England, his life, and more importantly his work, including poetry and plays. Through comprehensive readings of historical materials and Shakespeare’s works, students should look into the complexity of humanity in Shakespeare’s work, appreciate the rhetorical techniques that feature’s Shakespeare’s greatness, and hopefully develop and sharpen their ability to conduct critical thinking. Student’s will improve their reading ability, expand vocabulary, enhance presentation skills, and raise the capability to think critically and write well-structured essays. All these trainings prepare students for better spiritual as well as material qualities in real life. Students will also be more capable of identifying and understanding the humanistic concerns of our own time and learns how to interpret and intervene related issues in better ways.
