Course Description

由古至今廣義之西方史學經典不勝枚舉，本課程則著重於二十世紀中葉重振「批判的歷史哲學」之大家R. G. Collingwood (1889-1943)，透過精讀與討論其The Idea of History（《歷史的觀念》）一書，吾人不但可以對於歐洲史學自希臘羅馬時期乃至近代的科學史學有通貫的瞭解，更可以藉由其中收錄新近整理出版的手稿〈歷史哲學講稿〉，發現他更接近史學家重視歷史解釋的那一面。究極言之，對於歷史研究的哲學思考（譬如追問歷史知識如何可能），大有裨益於提升史學的境界。
From ancient times to the present, numerous historical masterpieces have become classics in the broader sense of Western historiography. This course focuses on R. G. Collingwood, a major figure who revitalized "critical philosophy of history" in his major work published in the mid-20th century. Through close reading and discussion of his work The Idea of History, students can gain a comprehensive understanding of European historiography from the Greco-Roman era to modern scientific history. Additionally, by studying newly edited and published manuscripts within The Idea of History, specifically the “Lectures on the Philosophy of History,” we could discover Collingwood's alignment with historians who value historical interpretation. Ultimately, philosophical reflections on historical research—such as questions about the possibility of historical knowledge—can significantly elevate the realm of history.
