Course Description
 
本課程旨在介紹印度佛教自佛陀時代至大乘佛教興起前的發展歷程，著重探討其在社會、文化和思想層面的演變。課程將涵蓋佛陀在世時的教團建立與運作，以及佛陀入滅後初期佛教的傳承與分裂過程，並簡要介紹部派佛教的對佛教思想的細緻分類和闡發。透過對歷史事件、經典文獻和思想脈絡的梳理，課程將幫助學生全面理解大乘佛教出現之前佛教發展的主要脈絡與核心思想變遷。

This course aims to introduce the developmental trajectory of Indian Buddhism from the time of the Buddha to the emergence of Mahāyāna Buddhism, with a focus on its social, cultural, and intellectual transformations. It will cover the establishment and functioning of the Buddhist community during the Buddha’s lifetime, the processes of transmission and division in early Buddhism following the Buddha’s passing, and a concise introduction to the detailed classification and elaboration of Buddhist thought within the early schools. By examining historical events, canonical texts, and the evolution of key ideas, the course will enable students to gain a comprehensive understanding of the major developments and shifts in core Buddhist thought prior to the rise of Mahāyāna Buddhism.

Course Objectives

1使學生理解佛陀時代的社會歷史背景，並理解佛教出現的原因。 To help students understand the social and historical context of the Buddha's time and the reasons for the emergence of Buddhism.
2使學生理解原始佛教教理，並分辨其與大乘佛教教理不同之處。 To enable students to comprehend the teachings of early Buddhism and distinguish them from the doctrines of Mahāyāna Buddhism.
3使學生習得部派分裂的歷史與重要部派的思想。 To equip students with knowledge of the history of the schisms among Buddhist schools and the key ideas of the major schools.
