Course Description

Prerequisites: The student is expected to have a basic command of Chinese Buddhist technical vocabulary, some experience with pre-modern Chinese grammar, and a strong interest in reading ancient texts of the Śrāvaka tradition translated into Chinese.

Course Description: This course exposes the student to the texts of an important genre of Chinese Buddhist translation literature, namely the Āgama sūtras, which represent the teachings of the Buddha as transmitted by the Indian Śrāvaka traditions. We will probe into the wealth of these scriptures in terms of literary devices, practical instructions, philosophical arguments, and psychological insights while touching on both their historical importance and their modern relevance.
