課程描述(若為實務型課程需含搭配產業界或非營利組織需求之說明)
Course Description

The course aims both to provide students with an insight into contemporary global issues presented and represented in news media and to enable them to identify the role of Taiwan among these issues while raising their consciousness of the shaping power of news media. These global issues include international political relations, the environment and sustainable development, global food problems, international public health, human rights, labor migration, ethnic conflict and genocide, trade and monetary relations, new digital technologies, etc. Students will acquire knowledge and understanding of these issues through close reading of news media and then learn how to establish connections between these global issues and local concerns so that they can build up a picture of what positions Taiwan has occupied, is occupying, and will occupy in the international context. At the same time, examining the ways these global issues are presented and represented in and between news media will alert students to the tremendous influence the news media can exert on the ways their audience see and comprehend the world. On successful completion of this course, students will be able to identify the global issues in news media and analyze the position of Taiwan in the global context while not forgetting the constituting power of news media.
