Course Description

地圖不但傳達了對地理空間之表述，也反映繪製者及時人的世界觀甚至宇宙觀，這一點古今中外皆然。從思想史的角度閱讀古輿圖，以見人們的地理想像、政治意圖與文化心態，更屢屢為時賢所道及。本課程重點不在於傳統中國的輿地之學，而是在理解古代中國的地圖測繪技術與慣例（如長江圖）之餘，從利瑪竇（Matteo Ricci, 1552-1610）傳入中國的世界地圖（《山海輿地圖》、《坤輿萬國全圖》、《兩儀玄覽圖》等）開始，旁及朝鮮之《混一疆理歷代國都之圖》，再到所謂「塞爾登先生的中國地圖」（Mr. Selden's map of China），嘗試追索這一既鑲嵌在地圖裡，又由地圖所建構的文化交流史。
Maps not only convey representations of geographic space but also reflect the worldview—and even cosmology—of their creators and contemporaries; this holds true across time and cultures. Reading ancient maps from the perspective of intellectual history to uncover people's geographical imagination, political intentions and cultural mentality has often been discussed by contemporary scholars. This course does not focus on traditional Chinese cartography per se. Rather, while engaging with ancient Chinese mapping techniques and protocols (such as the Map of the Yangtze River), it begins with world maps introduced to China by Matteo Ricci (1552–1610)—including the “Shanhai Yudi Tu,” the “Kunyu Wanguo Quantu,” and the “Liangyi Xuanlan Tu”—and also considers Korea’s "Map of Integrated Lands and Regions of Historical Countries and Capitals (of China)", culminating in the so-called Mr. Selden’s Map of China. The course aims to trace a history of cultural interaction that is both embedded in and constructed by maps.
