Course Description
 
 人類的文化與文明來自心靈的感受,然而這一切都是源自我們的感官,換句話說,沒有感官作為基礎,所有的體驗以及隨之產生的認知都沒有可能。
晚近對於身體與源自感官體驗的研究成為重要的研究課題,包括主體性是如何透過身體與感官體驗形成、因為身體五感,特別是針對視覺與聽覺而形成的審美體驗與流行文化,因為味覺與嗅覺而形成的飲食文化,還有因為觸覺而形成的親密關係。再加上因感官經驗產生的各種情感、情緒的體驗,結合最新的腦神經科學、生物醫學的研究,不但讓我們重新思索什麼是「人」的特徵,也在此基礎上展開了審美體驗與品味、崇高感與道德情感、以及各種成癮(藥物、甜食、酒精類飲料)面相。本課程將集中於這些面向,修課同學可藉此理解當代的文化研究的重要面貌。
Human culture and civilization stem from the sensations of the mind, yet all of these originate from our senses. In other words, without the senses as a foundation, all experience—and the cognition that arises from it—would be impossible.
In recent years, the body and sensory experience have become central themes in academic research. Topics include how subjectivity is formed through the body and sensory experiences; how aesthetic experiences and popular culture emerge from the five senses, particularly vision and hearing; how taste and smell contribute to food culture; and how touch relates to the formation of intimate relationships. Sensory experiences also evoke various emotions and feelings, which, when combined with cutting-edge research in neuroscience and biomedicine, not only prompt us to rethink what defines a “human being,” but also open up discussions around aesthetic experience and taste, the sense of the sublime and moral emotions, and various forms of addiction (to substances, sweets, alcohol, etc.).
This course will focus on these themes, offering students an opportunity to explore key dimensions of contemporary cultural studies.
