Course Description
 
過去在「歐洲中心論」的敘事中，近代世界的形成就等同於「西方的興起」。歐洲由於工業革命以來所取得的成功，逐步將其資本主義體制擴散到全世界，為所有的國家和民族所效法和遵循。然而，身處今日後殖民和後冷戰的雙重格局之下，這樣的敘事早已不合時宜，非但不符合歷史事實，也在道德上站不住腳。為了有以正視當代「人類世」的環境危機，本課程提供的是不以西方文明為唯一主角的全球史，檢視15世紀以來全球化的歷史發展。畢竟，歷史能幫助我們了解我們現在的生活世界，但我們必須從長時段的角度來審視過去，才能理解現在與過去的關連，進而為未來設想不同的可能性。
In the past, the formation of the modern world was equated with "the rise of the West" within the narrative of "Eurocentrism." Europe's success since the Industrial Revolution gradually spread its capitalist system worldwide, becoming a model emulated and followed by all nations and peoples. However, in today's dual context of post-colonialism and post-Cold War, such a narrative is no longer appropriate. Not only does it fail to align with historical facts, but it is also morally indefensible. To confront the environmental crisis of the contemporary Anthropocene, this course offers a global history that does not center solely on Western civilization. It examines the historical development of globalization since the 15th century. After all, history helps us understand the world we live in today, but we must adopt a long-term perspective to explore the past, understand the connections between the present and the past, and envision alternative possibilities for the future.

 透過課堂的參與及互動，使同學從中認識近代世界的發展與今日全球化史觀的形成。Through classroom participation and interaction, students will gain an understanding of the development of the modern world and the formation of contemporary globalization historical perspectives.
 透過比較東西方之古代世界地圖，教導同學換個視野看世界，從而了解歷史、地理的演進。By comparing ancient world maps from the East and the West, students are encouraged to adopt alternative viewpoints to better understand the evolution of history and geography.
 透過縱向歷史的演進，以及東西兩半球的視野，說明世界中心的轉變與台灣的地位。Through a longitudinal exploration of historical developments and a hemispheric perspective encompassing both the Eastern and Western worlds, the course will illustrate shifts in the world's centers of power and Taiwan's role within these dynamics.
